You know you want to ask in the mountains. What you don’t know yet is exactly where, how to get there without your partner working it out, and what the light is doing at that hour. I find all of that out for you, right down to the step where you go down on one knee.

Because I do the thinking and you only have to carry it out. I look for three places that fit what the two of you have, I walk them myself two weeks beforehand, and then you get instructions down to the individual bench. Park here, get out at the top station and not the middle one, turn left at the top, left again at the benches, and I’m already standing there. You don’t need to know these mountains and you don’t need to know when the light is good.
You can plan all of it from your sofa, on the other side of the world if that’s where you are. Most people who book me for this have never set foot on the mountain we end up choosing, and they only see it on the morning itself. That works because everything that needs local knowledge is my half of the job, not yours.

From your first message to your photos
Straight away
You get an immediate confirmation with the subject line “News from the Mountains”. If your partner catches that notification on your screen, it gives nothing away. My personal reply follows within a few days, with the pricing guide attached.
We get to know each other and I ask the questions you haven’t thought of yet. Why am I “coincidentally” up there too? What do we do when there’s no phone signal? How bad is it, really, if your partner senses something? And where does your own limit sit when the weather turns? We don’t need to talk money, that’s all in the guide.
If it feels right, you get an offer. Once it’s signed and the €650 deposit has landed, the date is yours and I start working.
Within 3 weeks
Usually three places that meet as many of your wishes as possible. For each one: where it is, how you get there, when the light is good, what makes it special and what the downsides are. With my own photos, satellite images and everything else I can find. You pick your favourite and that becomes plan A. Number two becomes plan B.
2 weeks before
Earlier makes no sense, because up here things change from week to week: grass cut or not, fresh snow or not, hut open or closed. I walk the route, time how long it takes, and stand there at the hour we’re planning for, to see what the light really does.
That’s what I build your script from, with photos from my phone alongside it. Here’s the ticket office, get out at the top station and not the middle one, left at the top, left again at the benches, that’s the spot. Stand like this so I can shoot it from the side, and turn your partner gently this way.
Shortly before the day we have a second video call and go through all of it once more. That’s when you ask the questions that turn up at three in the morning. In between I’m simply reachable, by email, WhatsApp or preferably Signal.
The day itself
I’m there before you are and I blend into the surroundings. You do what we agreed. Below is exactly how that goes.
2 working days and 3 weeks
Around ten photos are ready within two working days, so you have something to send while everyone is calling. The full set, about forty photos, arrives within three weeks.
Between your first message and the day itself there are usually a few months, sometimes a year. That’s fine by me. Most photographers won’t book more than three months ahead, and if you’re building a trip around this moment, that’s exactly the wrong way round.
The day itself
On the day you don’t have to work anything out. You have your instructions, I’m there well before you, and from that point on I’m just another person with a camera photographing the view.

I arrive first, check the light and take up the agreed position. The two of you arrive exactly as you would have arrived if I weren’t there. I’m already photographing from a distance, so you get the approach as well: the last few metres, the view, the face of someone who has no idea.

You go down on one knee when you want to. No signal from me, no timing imposed on you. I’m far enough away with a long lens, so whatever is said stays between the two of you. On the photos you’ll see the exact face you’re doing this for.

I come out, congratulate you both and explain that the two of us have been planning this for months. That’s usually the second round of tears. Then we photograph together on that same spot for another forty-five minutes to an hour. It isn’t an add-on I offer afterwards, it’s simply part of the package.
And if something gets noticed?
It matters far less than you think right now.
It happens: someone spots a camera, or finds it odd that you’re so insistent about this one particular walk. In practice your partner still doesn’t know when, where or how, and that’s the part that counts. I’ve never had a moment ruined by it. And we will have talked it through in the first call, so you’ll know what to do.

Want to ask outside Tyrol, in the Dolomites or in Vorarlberg? Travel costs are added, and they’re always in the offer before you sign. Lift tickets for the two of you on the day are yours to cover.
You pay in two parts: €650 on signing, the rest at the latest three weeks before the date. If you cancel after I’ve done the scouting, the part covering the photography and editing comes back to you. You never pay for photos I haven’t taken.

Staying invisible
This is the part everyone lies awake over, and rightly so: a stranger who is clearly waiting for something ruins it. So we choose in advance which of the two ways suits you.
Usually I’m the passing hiker. Boots or skis on, rucksack on my back, photographing the landscape like the ten other people up there are doing. At a viewpoint in Tyrol, a photographer is about the least remarkable thing walking around.
The second way is that you simply book me as your hiking guide and say so out loud. Then there’s no alibi to maintain, because it’s true: I’m there to bring you up. I can stand closer, I don’t need phone signal to coordinate anything, and I set the pace so we’re in the right place at the right time. This one is new in my offer and it isn’t for everyone: if you want to walk from the car park in good shoes, all you need is the plan and the photos.
Booking me as your hiking guide + €400
Sophia nailed the blocking of the proposal to keep it a surprise. My fiancée never even noticed Sophia hiding nearby until she was already taking photos.

The photos
The minute it has happened, every family group chat wants to see it, and half of them are five or eight time zones away. So you don’t wait weeks for your photos here. Six to eight weeks is normal in this industry, and by then it isn’t news any more. You get a first selection within two working days, so you have something to send while the phone is still going.
What happens with the photos after that is up to you. I put together a small selection I’d like to use and ask both of you whether that’s alright. If the answer is no, they go nowhere: not on my site, not on Instagram, not in my guide.

Weather and seasons
Mountains are mountains. That’s exactly why you have three chances with me instead of one, and why we agree well in advance what happens when the sky closes in.
Plan A, plan B and a spare day
If plan A can’t happen, we move to plan B, a place I’ve also been to. If that one goes as well, we shift to the day before or after, which I keep free for you. If you’re passing through and genuinely only have one day, that’s the reality and I’ll tell you so before you book.
You decide where your own limit sits
I’ll work in a snowstorm if I have to, and one of the best proposal photos I’ve taken was made in exactly that. But whether you want to ask in pouring rain is not my call. So in the first video call you decide where your limit sits, and I hold to it.
If it really can’t happen, you don’t lose your money
If plan A, plan B and the spare day all fall away, we move the whole thing free of charge within twelve months. If your travel plans won’t allow that, the part covering the photography and editing comes back to you. You never lose money to the weather, only to cancelling yourself.
And winter? A proposal in the snow is one of the best things I do. By four in the afternoon the light has already gone gold, there is almost nobody left on the mountain, and that silence up there does something to people before a single word has been said.
Sophia made the whole process of capturing the proposal so easy and navigated the bad weather on the day with composure. Nothing was ever a problem.

The photos show you the face. A film gives you the rest of it: what you actually said, the point where your voice gave out, and the sound somebody makes when they didn’t see this coming. I film in short clips alongside the photographs, never at their expense.

You get two things. The proposal itself, barely edited, a couple of minutes long: that’s the evidence. And a reel of 60 to 90 seconds that carries the mood of the morning. Both in landscape and in portrait, so you can hold up your phone that same evening without black bars down the sides.

Before you book
You fill in the contact form. You get an immediate confirmation with a harmless subject line, and my personal reply within a few days, with the pricing guide attached. After that we have a video call to see whether we click. If we do, you get an offer, and the date is yours once it’s signed and the €650 deposit has arrived.
Yes, and most people do. Everything up to the day itself happens by video call and email: the first conversation, the location report, your instructions and the dress rehearsal. I work in English, German and Dutch, and I’m used to calls at odd hours, so tell me your time zone and I’ll fit around it. The first time you see the mountain is usually the morning it happens.
The earlier the better, and there’s no limit at the other end: I’ll happily hold a date a year out, while a lot of photographers won’t look further than three months ahead. Count on at least six weeks between booking and the day, because the location report takes about three weeks and the scouting happens two weeks before the date. Less time than that? Just ask, sometimes it still works.

No, that’s the rule rather than the exception, and it’s exactly what the location report is for. What I do want to hear from you: what the two of you have with these mountains, how far you want to walk, what you want to be wearing and which season you’re coming in. Then I go and look.
Yes. Most people who book me for this aren’t mountain people at all, and they don’t need to be. I choose a place that matches your fitness and your shoes. That can be a lift and a fifteen minute walk, and it can be a proper climb. You tell me what you want, I make sure it’s realistic.
Secrecy and the surprise
I treat secrecy as part of the job. I only ever reply to your address, never to a shared one, and always in the same thread with the same harmless subject line. On the day I’m either the passing hiker or I’m officially booked as your hiking guide. Which of the two it is, we decide together.
That’s why my first email is called “News from the Mountains” and everything after it stays in that same thread. A notification on your screen gives nothing away. If you’d rather not use email at all, we can call or use Signal.
It matters far less than you think right now. Even if someone suspects that something is going on, they still don’t know when, where or how, and that’s the part that counts. I’ve never had a moment ruined by it, and we will have talked it through in the first call, so you’ll know what to do.
You can, for €400 extra. I’m a certified Tyrolean hiking guide, so you’d be booking me for exactly what I am: a two to three hour walk up to a beautiful spot. The advantage is that nothing has to be invented, I can stand closer, we don’t need phone signal, and I control the pace. We agree a code word for the moment we reach the place.
By agreeing it beforehand in enough detail that we don’t need to coordinate anything. You have your instructions, I’m there before you arrive, and we’ve agreed a signal. Up here, phone coverage is a luxury, not an assumption.
The plan, the weather and the day
We move to plan B, a second place I’ve also been to. If that doesn’t work either, we shift to the spare day before or after. And every decision runs past the weather limit you set yourself in the first call: I can work in a snowstorm, but it’s your moment and therefore your limit.

It depends on the place. Count on two to three hours from car park to car park, of which forty-five minutes to an hour is the photo session after the yes. Want to keep it shorter, that’s fine. Want to stay longer because it’s beautiful up there, also fine, up to about an hour and a half of shooting.
Only if you want to. There are beautiful places ten minutes from a mountain station, and there are places you climb two hours for. In the first call I ask what you can manage and what you’d enjoy, and then I look within that. A proposal where someone arrives sweaty and irritated is not a good proposal.
Whatever you’d normally wear on a day like that, and I’ll tell you beforehand what works at that particular spot. Good shoes and a long climb don’t go together, so if you want to stand there in a dress or a suit, I choose the place accordingly. The clothes are yours, the logistics are mine.

You get simple usage rights: using and publishing the photos for non-commercial purposes is fine. Reselling them to third parties is not, unless we agree that in writing.
